Puerto Rico's ‘Por Amor En El Caserio’ retells the story of 'Romeo and Juliet,' comes to New York....




Por Amor en el Caserio is a film about the struggles of a public housing community against drugs, guns and violence, written and produced by Antonio Morales and directed by Luis Enrique Rodriguez. A group of young, talented individuals from the largest public housing project in Puerto Rico have risen beyond their circumstances to star in a film by Antonio Morales that has opened the eyes and hearts of viewers on the island and abroad to the sobering realities of our public housing projects.

On September 26, 2013, POR AMOR EN EL CASERÍO opened in16 movie theaters
throughout Puerto Rico. Very good movie reviews continue to appear in El Nuevo Dia

and other local newspaper. Over 18,000 tickets-were purchased in the initial weekend

making it the 3rd, ranking movie seen at the theaters.


"POR AMOR EN EL CASERÍO," in English, "For Love in the Caserío," is a film based on the life experiences of writer/co-executive producer Antonio Morales and what the youth of the housing project Luis Llorens Torres deal with on a daily basis, topped off by a good dose of comedy.

The two main characters, Cristal and Angelo, meet and fall in love, yet their love is wrought with sacrifice since they each have family members that belong to the feuding gangs that keep the housing project in constant war.

POR AMOR EN EL CASERÍO delivers a powerful message of hope.


The panel will be led by Mr. Antonio Morales, Playwright and Co- Executive Producer, and several actors some whom are public housing residents.

Antonio Morales, the playwright was born and reared in Puerto Rico's largest public housing project in the Caribbean, Luis Lloréns Torres located in San Juan. At the age of 15, he founded the community's theatre workshop and named it Viviendo el Arte (Living the Art). A couple of years later, in November 2001, he released his play entitled Por Amor en el Caserío, a play that would transform lives, communities, and the youth of Puerto Rico one step at a time. Twelve years and over 500 productions of the play have passed since the first opening night of the performance.

In FY 2013, POR AMOR EN EL CASERÍO became the first ever Puerto Rican theatre play adapted to a feature film. Many of the actors and production crew members are public housing residents.

The production is sponsored by CINE-COOP (independent film makers), and private industry GFR Media at cost of $800,000 from private investors.

The Latin Pop group G-One (Ghetto One) is featured in the Recently premiered master cinematic work of Screenwriter and Executive Producer Antonio Morales Entitled "Por Amor En El Caserio.

The film features a profound message of social change, love and positivity and hope amidst poverty, despair and struggle. The message is about persistence and inspiration.

The film was produced in conjunction with The government of the Island of Puerto Rico dept of interior, Cine Co-op and GFR Media The film premiered on September 26th and is being shown and setting attendance records on the island of Puerto Rico, and will be screened in the month of November DAY 12 at Lovinger Theater at Lehman College in New York City .

The Office of the President, School of Arts and Humanities, the Office of Vice President sponsor this event for Student Affairs, and LALPRS. Dates are being arranged and sponsored for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
